The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) on August 26, 2025, issued the instructions in relation to the immersion of eco-friendly idols.
A technical sub-committee meeting was held on August 25, 2025 at the headquarters of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board regarding eco-friendly celebrations and the discussion referred to the Bombay High Court’s order dated July 24, 2025 in Public Interest Litigation No. 96/2024 and the guidelines regarding the immersion of Plaster of Paris (POP) idols as per the government decision dated August 01, 2025. Some local bodies had sought clarification on immersing eco-friendly idols under six feet in height.
After deliberation, the experts suggested that such idols should preferably be immersed in artificial ponds. However, where such arrangements are not available, immersion in natural water bodies may be allowed, provided the directions given in the 01.08.2025 Government Resolution on reuse of the immersed idols remain applicable.
